Online Casino Review Guidelines
The following internet casino review guidelines are used by Gambling.org in vetting online casinos to be reviewed by our editorial team.
When comparing Internet casinos and reading online casino reviews players should closely consider these rating guidelines before choosing a website to gamble at.
After meeting these minimum guidelines, virtual casinos are scored based on ongoing feedback and ratings from players in the Gambling.org community.
Please leave feedback on individual review pages listed on our site.
This page was last updated on Christmas Eve 12/24/2020.
Accreditation – Pertaining to the credentials a casino carries – namely that of the software platform and licensing/regulation.
If a casino is not licensed in a reputable jurisdiction, nor does not license a reputable, Random Number Generator (RNG)-certified software platform, it should be avoided.
Reputation – This pertains to both the overall track record of the casino (banking, guest relations, promotions, etc.) and the casino's overall customer service ratings (dealing with casino personnel firsthand).
For newer online casinos, a solid reputation must be established over time before a Gambling.org recommendation to players is given on this website.
Gaming – This pertains to the actual gaming experience and selection of casino games – both factors of which are directly impacted by the software platform. A large selection of games available in both download and Flash and mobile compatibility are top considerations in addition to overall entertainment factor.
Rewards – This pertains to the degree of which a casino values player loyalty with rewards and ongoing promotions with player-friendly bonuses and ongoing special events.
Casino Reviews Disclaimer
The most reliable online casino reviews are those which are free of bias. But finding a review that is 100% free of bias is almost as tricky as picking a single winning number on a Roulette wheel.
While it's possible, the odds are strongly against you. The fact of the matter is that most Internet casino reviews are written by affiliates who stand to financially benefit from player referrals.
It's something that simply cannot be avoided, as the vast majority of online casinos must seek out affiliates in order to remain successful in what is one of the most competitive industries on the Internet.
Gambling.org generates revenue as a white-hat affiliate, and as such, strictly affiliates with casinos that meet or exceed our online casino review guidelines (listed above).
Going one step further than other review providers, we incorporate live payer feedback and player ratings into our overall considerations for online gambling recommendations.
This ensures casino reviews at Gambling.org remain unbiased, impartial, up-to-date.
For players seeking a greater selection of online casino reviews than those listed on gambling.org, please heed the following when searching for bias-free reviews of virtual casinos.
Additional Casino Review Guidelines
Tone – Pay attention to the tone of the review. Overtly flowery and flattering language with excessive exclamation points and adjectives should serve as a warning flag. Objective language focusing on both pro's and con's, however, is a good sign.
Specificity – To say a casino is the best is one thing, but to cite specific reasons why it is the best is another thing altogether. Look for reviews that give precise reasons why the casino is being recommended. And not just because it has a large welcome bonus and/or uses a particular software platform either. The more details, the better.
Scope – This ties in with specificity; However, scope refers to the overall reach of the review. Some casino reviews may be specific but only focus on one area, such as the welcome bonus. A review with great scope should cover software accreditation, licensing credentials, game selection, accessibility, cashier options, customer service and promotions.
Timeliness – The best reviews are those with dated addendum's such as 'review last update on …'. These help attest to how accurate the review is, especially regarding promotions and accreditation certificates. Reviews citing outdated certificates should be further vetted.
Best Online Casino Ratings Factors
In place of live dealers, the outcome of casino games online – the roll of the dice, the spin of slot reels, or the drawing of a card – is determined by a computer program – a random number generator (RNG), to be exact.
The RNG creates an outcome for the game hundreds of times each second, with the final outcome determined by the precise moment in which the player clicks the mouse to take a card, roll the dice, or spin the reels.
It should be impossible to predict the exact moment in which a winning outcome will be decided, and is precisely why software testing facilities like iTech Labs, Gaming Associates and Gaming Laboratories International, test for unpredictability (in addition to reliability and fairness/odds) when doing RNG software certifications.
In addition to delivering fair and unpredictable hands, the software is responsible for the operation of the games, protection of player information, transaction security and other forms of safety and security.
Recommended Casino Software
Most of the best online casinos use licensed and certified casino software from a third party rather than developing their own proprietary platform.
Some of the most well known and respected casino software platforms include:
- NetEnt – Net Entertainment – NetEnt Casino Software – For nearly twenty years, NetEnt has been at the forefront of creating the most entertaining and realistic slot machines for casino operators.
- Microgaming – Microgaming Casino Software – One of the pioneering software developers in the iGaming industry, Microgaming online casino licensees are currently not permitted to accept wagers from US residents in non-regulated states.
- Playtech – Playtech Casino Software – Playtech has been at the forefront of iGaming innovation for nearly two decades. Launched in the late nineties, Playtech provides software solutions for some of the biggest names in both the brick ‘n mortar and online gambling industries.
- StarsGroup – Flutter – [PokerStars / Amaya] (Chartwell & Wagerlogic)
- Realtime Gaming – Realtime Gaming Casino Software – The most popular software platform for US players, Realtime Gaming has been powering many of the longest running, reputable online casinos catering to US players for over a decade.
Casino Accreditation
In addition to using an accredited software platform that has been RNG certified, it is mandatory that an online casino hold a license from a reputable gaming jurisdiction.
Other than the UK Gambling Commission (the most respected and active jurisdiction in the world), most jurisdictions involved with regulating all forms of online casino gambling are offshore.
This does not mean these gaming bodies are inferior – more often than not, they are popular with operators for their tax incentives.
Many of these are white-listed by the UK Gambling Commission, including the former Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta, now known as the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the Gibraltar Gambling Commission, Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission and the Alderney Gambling Control Commission.
Other respected 'offshore' regulatory bodies include the Curacao Gaming Commission (represented through CIGA), Antigua and Barbuda Directorate of Offshore Gaming and the Kahnawake Gaming Commission tribal online gambling regulators located in Mohawk Territory of Canada.
High roller roulette. The best and safest online casinos are licensed and regulated by reputable regulatory agencies such as those mentioned above. These agencies test the software (often through third party testing facilities) to ensure that it offers fair odds to the players and that it provides adequate protection.
By putting the Internet casinos through rigid testing and ongoing audits, regulators ensure that players are receiving payouts at an appropriate rate.
New Jersey, being the first state to regulate internet gambling, has been leading the way in the United States by setting precedents of what makes for the best online casino sites available to NJ players.
While New Jersey online casinos have been legal for 7 years and counting, there are still only 5 states in America that are regulating virtual casino games.
As more casino sites launch on the Internet, so too does the need for further regulation throughout the rest of the USA. Caesars Casino is one of the first and largest New Jersey gambling sites available so far but there are many more on the way hoping to get in on the new action.
Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia are also joining New Jersey and all of these states are among a select number of states regulating online betting.
Looking into a Casino's Reputation
With the proper casino software and licensing accreditation's in place, the best and most reputable online casinos are those destinations that have earned high marks with players, which is largely a testament of the casino's customer service and promotions, including bonus offers and tournaments.
When choosing an internet casino play at, it is important to find out what others are saying about the site in question.
Player forums and gambling.org's casino ratings and reviews can help you to find such casinos offering the best software, game selection, and promotions – all culminating to provide an experience that is similar to, if not better than, playing at a brick and mortar casino.
Mobile Casino Games & Casino Apps
There are many other virtual casino gambling options available on mobile platforms like Google Play the iPhone and iPad Apple App Store.
The change of virtual casinos over to mobile apps is only just beginning. About a decade ago we estimated that in less than 10 years more than 50% of all online gambling activities would be done through mobile devices.
Now 10 years later in 2020 the actual numbers are a little more than 60% of all internet betting is currently done on mobile devices.
Currently Mobile Casino Apps are mostly limited to free money games that allow players to buy more gaming chips if they run out of free casino chips, however these are actually worthless other than entertainment value.
We are beginning to see more real money casino apps and expect online gambling apps to be more common in the near future.
In 2020-2021, the world of e-gambling is diverse yet rapidly merging – a far cry from the early 1990's when the first online casinos became available on the internet and started accepting bets.
Although there is dispute over which casino was the actual first to launch live and begin accepting real money casino wagers, there is no disputing that what began as a small group of pioneering iGaming businesses – thanks to the likes of Microgaming and Playtech – has become a booming, multi-billion-dollar online industry (60+ billion dollars in 2020).
The best online casinos of today are designed to create as close an experience to that found at the world's most popular gambling destinations such as Las Vegas, Atlantic City and Macau.
It is this convenience and trustworthiness of reputable online casinos that allows people to play more often while keeping their skills sharp.
Offshore Online Casinos Accepting US Players

Wikipedia's online casino page is another good source of general internet casino information. It covers a broad range of casino games with historical facts and game rules.
The regulations on US online gambling across the country have been through quite the hustle, with many interpretations on what is allowed and what is not, with states that have seen the opportunities that come along with a legal framework for Internet wagering and others that on account of their beliefs state against it. On that account, Washington online gambling is on the extreme side of restrictive actions taken against it. With a constant attitude against USA online casinos, Washington takes the battle to the next level, being one of the few states that have a clear specification that opposes Internet wagering.

Overview on the Washington State's Gambling Market
There are three main directions to take into consideration when speaking of betting in the state:
- It takes one of the strongest anti-online gambling stances in the country, making it illegal for online gambling in Washington State, to be organized. Washington online poker has had some attempts at being regulated, but WA is far from becoming one of the legal online gambling sites.
- The biggest off-line option for exerting betting are the tribal land based casinos, with more than 20 tribes running almost 30 casino businesses. The year 1999 has found these casinos on the upturn, after enabling them the use of slot machines, a move that gave them a clear advantage over their rivals: card rooms.
- Early developed card rooms in which were, at first, allowed only non-banked games, but now get to offer poker, as well as blackjack. They have demanded the permit for slots machines being included in their offer, to compete with the tribal casinos, but were thus far denied all opportunities of doing so.
While further analyzing the current situation, it is easy to observe that while the tribal casinos have the largest spread, with the most options and gather the highest profit, somewhere around 2 billion dollars. But their paid taxes is zero, given the federal law protecting the Native-Americans and allowing them to use the amount that would've gone to the state's income, for investments in the tribe's needs. This means that the heavy burden of tax collecting falls on the shoulders of the lottery and the commercially owned card rooms. They total an amount of only 200 million dollars. Perhaps, under these conditions, by refusing to legalize online gambling, Washington denies itself an important means of income.
Land-based Casinos
Even before the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act came into effect, there was a lot of discussion on establishing the ground rules for legally wagering. First, the state constitution denied categorically all forms of gambling. Then, one by one, horse races were allowed and then bingo and raffles. When these were deemed unconstitutional, it was stipulated that a Gambling Commission had to be set in place, for it to regulate this particular domain. Thus, in 1971, the first 'casino nights' were allowed, as a charitable event. This has been the first step towards gambling expansion, with card rooms following soon and finally the first agreement with an Indian tribe, for the opening of a stateside casino, all the way in 1992. With all of these measures put in motion, we would have expected that Washington state online gambling regulations would be a swift walk in the park, instead of the fierce struggle that this day presents.
But even these tribal casinos have a bit of a battle of their own. Recently, the Cowlitz tribe opened a state-of-the-art resort casino, near Portland, for a massive investment of over 500 million USD, containing a high number of slot machines, restaurants, and other facilities. However, regardless of all the excitement around this grand-opening, there were those who had nothing but to lose. The close-by establishment of the Grand Ronde tribe has blamed a loss of revenue of almost 40%. Taking into account the experience of this particular tribe, it's hard to believe that many such tribes are going to welcome the US online gambling stage being expanded in this state.
Card Rooms
Free Online Casino Gambling Sites
These establishments, have come into the public's attention earlier on, in 1974 and represent the main competitor for tribal casinos, especially in the absence of any Washington online casino for real money sites. The state has a large number of poker rooms, more than many other states. But there aren't any large card rooms. House of fun app legit. The highest number of poker tables in a single location is of 32. Most are grouped into bunches of 3-5 poker tables, usually hosted by bars.
Washington State Online Gambling
Based on causes that are currently eluding our understanding, the Gambling Commission has an unusually aggressive attitude against online gambling for Washington. This is among the few states that have specifically stated in its regulations a ban on Internet wagering activity. Besides the fact that the laws in the matter stipulate some of the fiercest punishments for illegal activities, the most interesting moment on this regard came in 2006, when lawmakers decided that felony charges can be pursued for those that use the Internet, among other means, to carry out any activity concerning gambling. Just to clarify the example, felony charges, in this case, can go up to 10000 USD fine, along with a maximum of 5 years imprisonment.
This being the case, it's no wonder that no operator of online sports betting for Washington State wanted to take the chance and risk such penalties as are stated in the law. The same goes for any software provider or operator who wanted to base their business here and start some Washington online casinos.
Luckily for willing players, the changes in US online gambling regulations also affected the interpretations for the state law. After the rebuffing in 2011 of the Wire Act, all the restrictions and the rules mentioned before, only apply to operators and not to the average everyday player.
Legal Attempts
Not to understand from all stated above, that no attempts have been made to legalize some form of virtual betting. Following the trend of a much more relaxed view on online gambling in the US in general, several supporters have tried on different occasions to push a bill. Most debates have been around the legalization of online poker in Washington.
The most intense discussion happened in 2010, around the idea that residents had the right to play Internet poker and were not meant to become subject of a felony by doing this. This has seen the Supreme Court of Washington, which not only shut the idea down but even stated that it was among the state's prerogatives to elaborate such punishments. The bills that followed didn't get this much attention, often enough failing to receive even a hearing. What is indeed gratifying is that regardless of the hostility towards such a concept, the supporters of a bill that would legalize online poker aren't yet giving up.
Other options
Given the ever-changing stance against Washington online casinos and the apparent worsening of conditions, any online gambling US player is advised to constantly be up to date with the latest news on this subject. For the moment, the options of playing in online casinos refer exclusively to those websites that have their business based outside the state, mostly being licensed in different countries, like Curacao, Malta or Canada, to name a few. As is the best example of a renowned website Bovada Casino. Bovada is legal in Washington and is residents' favourite online casino brand. Seeing how it is not based in the US, it can offer its gaming services to citizens of this specific state, without fear of repercussions both from the site's point of view, as well as from its players.

Any online casino accepting Washington players is going to demand a means of payment that includes extra verification, such as wire transfer. They need more days to be accomplished but are the safest way.
How about future prospects on legislative relaxation on the online gambling domain?Online gambling Washington State law has had some bills being pushed for legalizing poker, without any real success. We can, therefore, assess that no online casino in Washington is to be seen anytime soon.
